more,
or depositing a term deposit of $50,000.00 or more for a term of
90
days or more. If the home loan is approved and drawn down, the
school will receive the amount of $250.00 from ASB, or if a Term

Monday 24th May 2010
We have
some very bad news today. At some time yesterday evening a
group of vandals entered our class room block nearest the main
road and proceeded to vandalise the classes. They threw paint
around walls, the carpet, children's
work and tables. Graffiti was found on the carpet, whiteboards
and children's work. Teachers
resources, work, stationery, especially pens, whiteboard
markers and permanent markers were taken or thrown around the
classes. Computers,
monitors, cameras, a special needs electronic assistive
technology equipment worth thousands, were also taken.
We are
currently assessing the damage and will have started the cleanup
by the time you read this.
The police
have already been in, and have taken fingerprints and
evidence that will hopefully lead to the apprehension of
the thieves. I have also given the police the footage that was
caught on the security cameras. There are clear images of 4
teenaged girls taken at around 5.47pm yesterday.
If you saw
anything at all from 5pm onwards yesterday, please ring and let
the police know. This has been devastating for our students
and staff. The mindless nature of the damage and the theft of
equipment essential to our students learning programmes
has left us shaken and angry.
These
thieves and vandals need to be caught, the damage they have done
to our students and staff’s emotional well being is huge and the
impact will be felt well into the future.
Again if
you saw, heard or know anything, let Damian from the Porirua
Police know 2381472 as soon as possible.
The learning never ends for top teacher
By ESTHER LAUAKI - Kapi-Mana News
LEARN AND
PLAY: Room 10 students at Porirua School give a cheer
for their teacher, Bev Climo, who was nominated for a
teaching excellence award last week.
Most people have
had a teacher who has left a lasting impression. Porirua
School's Bev Climo has been recognised as one such role model,
being nominated for a National Excellence in Teaching and
Leadership Award.
Ms Climo says
she was "quite amazed" when she found out at last Monday's staff
meeting she had been nominated for the award.
"I see myself as
the same as most teachers. I think most teachers just do the
best they can. You just work hard and enjoy the children."
She says there
is no real secret to her work and despite her job title the
learning never stops.
"As teachers you
notice the things you want to do better. I go to a lot of
courses, I read up on different ways to improve the way I
teach."
The days of rote
learning are long gone, replaced with more interactive methods,
she says.
"Teaching is
different now from when I was at school. [They] stood there, in
front of the class, and taught and those who did well in the
tests got the good marks.
"Now I think
working together and learning from each other is better. It's
about problem-solving and working together to solve that
problem."
Ms Climo says
Porirua School provided her with the opportunities which have
enriched her career.
"I was well
supported by the school. It's the principal and the board of
trustees who have made this possible. I couldn't have done these
things without them."
She finds the
most joy in knowing she's serving her pupils and their families
well.
"I get good
feedback at parent teacher interviews and as a teacher that
means a lot. They're entrusting their children to you. How can
that not make you want to do right by them?" Ms Climo says.
The thought of
shaping young lives and making a difference makes her job
worthwhile, she says.
"You put in a
lot of hours and you get great rewards, and they're things like
[seeing] a child that's struggling with something and then they
succeed.
"Who doesn't
love success?"
Ms Climo, along
with 20 other nominees from around Wellington, goes forward to
the regional awards in May, with the Wellington recipients
progressing to a national awards ceremony in late 2010.
