Porirua School
is a school where students' needs are the first consideration
in decision making.
Our
mission statement,
"Porirua School aims to have happy,
healthy student who enjoy learning with the encouragement
and support of the many cultures reflected in the school
community," is the blueprint for action.
The many cultures
that are a part of our school give the school a rich diversity,
where students grow up appreciating other cultures and their
beliefs. Porirua School enjoys the support of the community.
It has an open door policy and values input from the community.
The school is a safe, secure and positive environment for
students, staff and parent/caregivers. Students feel valued
and supported and learn to make choices and to take responsibility
for their decisions.
Students, staff and the community have high expectations
of the students' achievement in developing their talents
to their full potential, intellectually, personally and socially.
The school provides a rich variety of life and learning experiences
for the students inside and outside the classroom. We aim
to open their eyes to the world and the opportunities it
provides. A major focus for students is the development of
self-esteem and enhancing their talents and skills in the
belief that they will achieve their goals.
Porirua School follows the Ngati Toa kaupapa and has strong
links with Takapuwahia Marae. We have a bilingual whanau
class where the students receive instruction in Maori and
English. An off site class from Kapi Mana School catering
for the needs of students with intellectual, physical, emotional
and behavioural disabilities is located at our school. The
students are mainstreamed into our school to meet their needs.
Porirua School hosts after school care for students. Te Ropu
Tamahine Girls Club, which provides a self-esteem programme
for our girls on Wednesday afternoons, is a successful innovation.
Porirua School has been a leader in the development of Information
Communication Technology for well over a decade. Students
leaving our school are technologically advanced and competent
in using leading edge technology.
Porirua School is the oldest school in the Porirua Basin.
In 1863, public money was advanced to Porirua School, which
was originally sited by the Barracks in Paremata. Before
moving to its present site in Elsdon in 1958, it was located
where the Porirua Town Centre currently stands. Many
successful local identities had their early schooling at
Porirua School. Currently the school enjoys a high profile
nationally for the students' learning achievements and it's
focus on using computers and information technology.
The school roll is multicultural and has
two bilingual Maori
classes where the students receive their education in Maori
and English, and a Special Needs Unit of intellectually disabled
students who are mainstreamed into our school where appropriate.
Porirua School is a contributing school situated 20ks north
of Wellington. The location of our school is in Elsdon a
suburb or Porirua, which is bounded by the Porirua Harbour
to the northeast and native bush clad hills on the southwest.
Porirua School has a proud tradition spanning 140 years,
as it was the first school in the Porirua Basin. The school
is fortunate in the recent developments in the area as it
has easy access to Takapuwahia Marae, city library, art gallery,
recreation centre, swimming complex and sports fields and
parks and bush walks. The school uses these resources continually
in their programmes.
